INTRODUCTION:

"When you first decide to write a book about your favourite hobby, or a thesis for a degree, the first step is to research the subject you intend to cover thoroughly.

Researching a subject first begins by reviewing any previous literature on the subject.  This literature can cover books, articles in magazines, journals and newspaper reports.  If you have original material based upon experiment or experience so much the better.  It should be pointed out however that few books are produced from original material only.

This collection of articles on the Stafford could be the beginning of an excellent book on the breed.  I present them here unabridged, with my own comments added only where necessary.

My choice of material has been to select useful and interesting writings on the breed by well known personalities from the past and the present.  It should be enjoyable to read and useful to the novice, the breeder, the exhibitor, and everyone interested in this wonderful breed of dog from Staffordshire.

"NEW BOOK REVIEW

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Scrapbook

This Scrapbook was edited and compiled by Jack Miller of Rellim Fame. Our breed has always suffered from a lack or shortage of the written word.  Only John Gordon who produced several informative handbooks and an encyclopaedia of the Staffordshire Gull Terrier, has made a real contribution in the last 20 years. I believe that Mike Homan is preparing (soon to be published) a history of the breed and that (Nap) A.W.A. Cairns is about to produce his forthcoming book, but nothing else, apart from the Stafford Magazine, or at any rate, nothing else of any consequence has appeared. When this book arrived I was delighted to be given the opportunity of reviewing It. The book is, without doubt, unique and literally contains 'something for everyone'; it is full of articles from wellknown, end not so wellknown, people with subjects ranging from feeding, judging, memories, kennelling and even A1!

Some of the articles are highly controversial and thought provoking and I am sure will stimulate some reaction from those who disagree, there are many photographs 'ancient' and modern, which I am sure readers will find very interesting, particularly of some of the dogs of the past, ie., Ch. Rellim Warpaint, Emden Boleredo, Gentleman Jackson, Bourtie Diamond Prince, Bonstones Boncordia, Ch. Corsair of Wyncote, and not forgetting Ch. Rellim Ferryvale Victor.

This book is a must for the devoted Staffordshire Bull Terrier devotee, whether or not they agree with some of the views and opinions within, but everyone will learn something and be greatly entertained - a collectors item if ever I saw one.
