FIFTH EDITION

FOREWORD - 5th edition

Joe Dunn is my oldest friend in the Staffordshire world, and although I have been interested in various breeds of dog for practically the whole of my life, it was not until 1934 that I met Joe, and through him became a strong supporter of the Staffordshire ; I am therefore very glad of this opportunity of saying a few words of introduction to the fifth edition of his book on the breed.

Although the breed had been kept as pals, house guards, and "sporting companions " in the black country and other districts for well over 100 years, it was not until the early nineteen thirties that, largely owing to Joe's interest and activities in the matter, breeders formed themselves into a club to promote and foster the welfare of the Staffordshire.

The original members of the club, of which he was secretary, must well remember the difficult but interesting times we had in forming the club, drawing up the standard, and establishing recognition by the Kennel Club.

From these early beginnings there have been wonderful developments, and there are now clubs in England, Scotland and Ireland, devoted exclusively to the breed, and challenge certificates are provided at most of the larger Ch. Shows.

The rise in popularity of the Staffordshire in the last fifteen years has been phenomenal, and must be a source of great satisfaction to the original promoters, who are now well entitled to sit back and watch with interest the development of the breed under the capable direction of that young army of keen breeders and organisers who have joined the ranks during the last eight or ten years.

It is interesting to note that although the original standard for the breed has recently been subjected to very rigorous examination and revision, it is still in all essentials very much as drawn up by the old-timers in 1935 !  'Nuf sed !

This latest edition of Mr. Dunn's book is full of matter which will be of great interest and value to breeders both present and future, and should meet with a widespread demand.

COVER ILLUSTRATION

"ROSE.   A Granddaughter of the Dog BILLY."

Reproduced from an original engraving by Charles Fairland after a portrait by E. Morley, published in 1837.

This engraving is of great rarity and has never been reproduced in any previous Dog Book. It is an historically important Staffordshire Bull Terrier portrait, for not only is " Rose " a typical example of what the " Bull and Terrier " of over a hundred years ago looked like, but her collar denotes that she has proven her courage and ability at Bull Baiting.

It is not known if the " Billy " referred to is the famous Rat-Killer of the 1820's, but he also was a white with tan head markings such as " Rose " shown in this engraving, reproduced from a photograph loaned by Gerald Massey.

COMMENT BY AUTHOR

Comments by the Author on the engraving of "Rose."

In drawing the attention of my readers to the engraving of " Rose," I would like them to note the excellent type which is portrayed of the "Bull and Terriers" which were in existence over one hundred years ago. Please note the small rose ears, the beautiful dark, large round eyes set wide apart, the definite " Stop," also the excellent " Furrough " extending from nose to the apex of skull and the well pronounced cheek muscles, the distance from stop to nose and stop to apex of skull, also the squareness and depth of muzzle, with the desired tight lips. The white marks on front of lips are not teeth, this will be seen on closer examination.

My best thanks to Mr. Gerald Massey for the loan of the engraving.
